An Victorian to 1920s silver locket, bearing a French mark for silver, in the
style of the Orthodox Christian Church, I did think it was a Russian piece when
I first obtained it. Hallmarked with the French "eagle head" mark to the fixed
suspension loop with a bigorne mark to the reverse, which indicates 800/1000
silver, no makers mark that I can see.
The locket is oval in shape and quite thick, to the back is a hinged opening
silver rimmed glass panel, with a white enamel decoration to part of the
silver, the enamel is showing signs of wear and rough patches and one very
small patch of bare metal (on the bottom).
To front is an enamel picture or icon of either Mary or a female saint
exposing the Sacred Heart, picked out in pale and dark blue, green, pink and
light brown enamel, there are no features to the face, a very small part of the
dark blue is either missing or was not applied, when made. Again white enamel
to the rim which is in slightly better condition than the reverse, though look
at picture 4 just under the suspension loop and there you will see a tiny rough
and bare part.
Overall it is in better than fair condition and any of the enamel faults do
not affect it's primary purpose and the locket closes well: I have just applied
a basic clean to it and far greater improvement in the lockets appearance would
be achieved by further cleaning but that would not be to everybody's choice and
that decision is left to the new custodian.
